Ted Flynn filled his pipe and lighted a match, stirring the flame over the tobacco. A thick plume of smoke rose into the air over his desk. He blew out the match and looked through the smoke at the two men standing across from him.
âWhatâs the word on the store, boys?â he asked.
âPretty much everything is gone,â said Al King. âAnything that wasnât burned was ruined when they put out the fire. Also, the smoke destroyed a lot of things.â
âItâs going to cost a lot of money to rebuild it. Maybe more than itâs worth.â
âThe fire would have spread to the buildings next door if he hadnât fired those shots,â King observed. âThey were barely able to put it out â it was blazing real good.â
âThe bastard is crazy. Heâs out of his mind.â Flynn stared past King to a point on the wall. âI should have had someone on guard duty there,â he said quietly.
âIâll make it happen,â said Don Rowland. âStarting tonight.â
âAnd put someone at the boarding house, too. I want riders with guns on duty here at the Rimrock â at least five of them.â The two men nodded. Flynn sat back in his chair and brushed some stray flecks of tobacco off his shirt. âNow we have to consider our next move. We canât sit around waiting for Chesham. Weâve got to find him.â
âYou have any idea where he might be hiding, boss?â asked King.
Flynn shook his head. âNo idea at all,â he said. âThatâs why I want you, Don, to get some men together and take to the hills. I want yâall to check every gully, every box canyon â everything. Take some provisions â it should take you at least two days to do a thorough job. If he is hiding in the hills, then the only place he could be is south of here.â He glanced at King. âYouâre going to be in charge of security here at the ranch, and in town.â
âIâll see to it,â King said.
âHow did he even know I own the store? I didnât own it when he went away to New Mexico. Someone is giving him information.â
âWho would do that?â asked Rowland.
âI donât know. But when we get our hands on Hank Chesham, weâre going to ask him some real hard questions. Weâre going to find out whoâs been helping him. Whoever it is, theyâre going to pay.â
âSo you want him taken alive, no matter what?â
Flynn drew on his pipe before answering. âI would prefer taking him alive. There are things I want to know. But if he wonât come willingly and the only thing you can do is shoot him then . . . go ahead and kill him.â
